Caterpillar Working on
Marine Advanced Propulsion

Caterpillar Marine, partnering with Caterpillar Innovation & Technology Development Division (ITDD), is developing a proprietary advanced propulsion system for marine applications. The Cat Marine Advanced Variable Drive (AVD) leverages Caterpillar’s extensive experience with heavy-duty continuously variable transmission (CVT) technology, advanced controls and power system integration knowledge.

In this joint development, ITDD is leading a cross-functional innovation team to develop and validate a fully integrated marine propulsion system from bridge interface down to the propellers.

Supercarrier Equipped with
Navy’s First IP Video System

The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), the first in the new Ford-class of nuclear-powered supercarriers, is going to sea with a Globecomm-designed, multifunctional communications and entertainment system along with the first IP video system in the U.S. Navy fleet.

As a turnkey solutions provider/systems integration subcontractor to Huntington Ingalls Industries’ Newport News Shipbuilding, Globecomm provided the USS Gerald R. Ford with an advanced satellite and fiber-optic-based communications distribution infrastructure in addition to a newly improved SITE TV IP video system that provides the crew with live-streaming media options, multimedia programming while at sea, as well as pier-side cable services. These innovative systems are expected to deliver tremendous cost savings along with superior quality, scalability and the flexibility to add new capabilities and services in the future.

GeoSwath Multibeam Systems
For Lake Surveying

Garmin International has long recognized the benefits of using GeoSwath systems for its lake-surveying program and upgraded four existing systems by replacing them with Kongsberg’s GeoSwath 4 shallow-water multibeam system. The new transducers and control units together with all new software will allow faster and more accurate mapping of lakes and will allow Garmin to add more sites and higher-accuracy charts to their existing recreational database.

Ranger 2 USBL Tracks
Gavia AUV in Trials

Teledyne Gavia and Sonardyne International Ltd. have successfully demonstrated the capabilities of the Ranger 2 USBL system acoustically tracking a Teledyne Gavia Offshore Surveyor AUV during trials in Plymouth, England. The AUV was equipped with Sonardyne’s 6G Nano transponder, specifically designed to acoustically position small underwater vehicles and divers.

The trials, conducted at Sonardyne’s trials facility in Plymouth, U.K., utilized the company’s vessel Echo Explorer. The AUV was launched and programmed to transit significant distances while being tracked by Ranger 2 and using the AUV’s own modem to update its INS. After the vehicle was recovered, the post-processed data demonstrated that the integration was successful.

Orca ESS Receives
DNV GL Type Approval

Corvus Energy has received type approval by DNV GL for its Orca energy storage system (ESS) for use in battery-powered or hybrid vessels and offshore units. DNV GL approval confirms that the latest generation of ESS from Corvus Energy has been found in compliance with international standards, regulations and recognized DNV GL rules.

Orca was awarded Type Approval Certificate No. TAE000026N, which is valid to August 2022. Products approved by this certificate are accepted for installation on all vessels classed by DNV GL.

Wärtsilä Induction Charging
Tested on Hybrid Ferry

Wärtsilä has successfully tested its automatic wireless induction charging system on a hybrid-powered coastal ferry. This is the first commercial ferry in the world operating with high-power wireless charging capability for its batteries, and the successful project represents a notable breakthrough in the evolution of plug-in electrically operated vessels. The tests were carried out on the 85-m-long MF Folgefonn in Norwegian waters.

Wireless charging eliminates the cable connection between the vessel and shore, thereby securing and facilitating safe connections and disconnections. It also reduces maintenance since wear and tear to physical connection lines is eliminated.

The integrated Wärtsilä system is based on inductive power transfer and is capable of transferring more than a MW of electrical energy.

The Wärtsilä system is designed to maintain efficient power transfer at distances of 50 cm between the two charging plates built into the side of the vessel and the quay.

Smartglasses to Aid Technicians
During Antenna Conversions

Cobham SATCOM is working with custom software house Kanda and Osterhout Design Group (ODG) smartglasses to build an Augmented Reality (AR) wearable solution for maritime service technicians. With AR already established as an efficiency-enhancing tool for business and industrial applications, the project is a proof of concept that will show the potential for AR to support professionals installing and servicing equipment on ships.

The AR smartglasses team is working with ODG’s award-winning R-7 smartglasses to develop a solution for installation technicians in the field who are tasked with in-situ conversions of SAILOR VSAT antennas from Ku to Ka-band, using field conversion kits. The smartglasses provide step-by-step guidance to their wearer during conversion installations, making paper manuals obsolete and greatly speeding up and simplifying the process.

The AR smartglasses solution can reduce costs for vessels and fleets when they are switching to a different satcom service but keeping the same antenna on board. The technician wearing the glasses will receive all the information required in their line of sight; ensuring that strict quality and technical guidelines are followed.
