Online Course Trains
For Cyber Awareness

The United States Maritime Resource Center (USMRC) has launched a new, innovative e-learning course called Cyber Awareness for Mariners, which provides mariners aboard any vessel with a better understanding of common vulnerabilities to onboard computer-based networks and industrial control systems to include both operational and information technologies. It also offers tested and effective guidance to help prevent onboard cyber disruptions.

Vessel owners and operators, as well as ship management and crew staffing companies, also will benefit from the course, which is derived from actual onboard research and analysis in the marine industrial environment, across numerous vessel types and a wide range of cargo, passenger and specialized operations.

This training is a valuable resource available to meet the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Interim Draft Guidelines on Maritime Cyber Risk Management, which calls for the “urgent need to raise awareness on cyber risk threats and vulnerabilities.”

Master’s in Maritime
Tech in Malaysia

DCNS, Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM) and Ecole Centrale de Nantes have signed a memorandum of agreement to develop a master’s in maritime technology in Malaysia. They will develop courses of excellence that will contribute to developing a high-level of expertise in the maritime domain in Malaysia.

The first year of the master’s will take place within UPNM in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with Centrale Nantes as an academic partner. For the second year, a selection of Master 1-graduated students will be offered the opportunity to study in Nantes, France, within Centrale Nantes.

The specialized Master 2 will include courses devoted to warship integration technology, with the support of DCNS experts.

The training of Malaysian teachers for the program will start September 2017 under the management of Centrale Nantes, with the start of the master’s program planned for January 2018.

Open Platform Unifies
Data from Multiple Tech

Kongsberg has launched Kognifai, an open and collaborative digital platform that places a world-class portfolio of applications into the cloud. Kognifai focuses on optimizing data access and analysis for customers across maritime and energy industries and provides an integrated development and distribution platform for efficiency-enhancing applications.

Kognifai is a digital ecosystem for users to collect, store, analyze and apply the data they generate using Kongsberg and third-party systems. It is also an expert platform for development of new data-centric applications and a single portal to access solutions developed by Kongsberg and certified third-party developers.

A&M, AISTECH to Share
Data to Monitor Vessels

Aerial & Maritime Ltd. (A&M) has entered into a five-year mutual data service agreement with AISTECH Srl. The first data delivery is expected in 2018. Both parties will gain access to AIS data for monitoring vessels from the other party’s constellation of satellites and to ADS-B data for monitoring commercial aircraft. The agreement will give both parties early access to data from outside their initial satellite coverage area.

GAMEX ’17 Trials
Collaborative Robots

The NRV Alliance participated in the sea trial GAMEX ’17 (Greek ARIADNE Mine countermeasure Experiment) in the Gulf of Patras, Greece. New assets on board are targeted to enhance collaborative robotics for MCM applications. This is part of the first CMRE (Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation) scientific campaign of 2017.

One vehicle aboard the vessel is called MUSCLE, a prototype developed by CMRE for seabed mapping with automatic behavior capabilities. The other is CAT (Collaborative Autonomy Testbed), which is for target reacquisition missions (typically simulated naval mines on the seafloor). CAT was tested to revisit targets acoustically detected by MUSCLE, with its three sensors: a 2.25-MHz Teledyne BlueView downward-looking multibeam echosounder, a forward-looking 900-kHz BlueView multibeam echosounder and a camera. This will enable further research on autonomy behaviors for target reacquisition, 3D target reconstruction and identification and obstacle avoidance.

Pressure-Tolerant Battery
Project Moves to Full Trials

As part of a two-year project to develop a pressure-tolerant lithium-sulfur battery pack for marine autonomous systems, the consortium led by Steatite and comprising OXIS Energy, MSubs and the U.K. National Oceanography Centre (NOC) has made tremendous advances in battery capability through extensive design and testing. The project is now moving toward full open-water trials in two deep-dive vehicles, the Deepbots System and the NOC’s Autosub Long-range, dubbed “Boaty McBoatface.”

Following trials in mid-2017, the technology will be made production-capable, with battery packs to be seamlessly integrated into a range of diverse applications.

Teledyne Hosts Tech
Focus Workshop in China

Teledyne Marine hosted the inaugural Technology Focus Days in China, a workshop exclusively for organizations, customers and distributors in the region. It featured presentations and demonstrations, plus networking opportunities. The focus was on the plethora of technology in the combined Teledyne Marine technology segments (imaging, instruments, interconnect and vehicles), showcasing products and technologies for markets such as energy, hydrography, navigation, oceanography, water resources and civil engineering.

Tech demonstrations included: BlueView M900 and M450 sonars, the SeaBotix LBV2000 ROV, TSS Saturn navigation system, RESON T-50P and T-20P multibeam echosounders, Odom MKIII single-beam echosounder, and the Oceanscience rapidCAST underway profiling system, plus classroom training on PDS imaging processing software.
